Cardiff to Costa Rica: Journey of a Lifetime

‘Cardiff to Costa Rica: A Journey of a Lifetime’: This half hour documentary reveals the at times heartbreaking and often uplifting stories of 31 people trekking through the Costa Rican Rainforest in aid of the charity Marie Curie. Each had a personal reason for embarking on the adventure, but all had to work together to complete the journey of a lifetime.

In April 2016 a group of charity fundraisers will left the Marie Curie Hospice in Penarth and travelled to Costa Rica to embark on an eight day trek up volcanoes and through rainforest, over some treacherous terrain, with the aim of raising more than £100,000 between them.

Some were trekking in memory of a loved one, others wanted to push themselves to their limits, and every member of the team wanted to raise money for a fantastic cause.

Last year Tracey and Liam Maton lost their brother Craig to cancer. Craig had been cared for by the team at Marie Curie, so now Tracey and Craig want to help other families like themselves. For them the trek was particularly hard, because they marked Craig’s birthday while they’re in Costa Rica.

For Bryan Gunton and Dave Went this trek was be third time lucky. The two friends met on a Marie Curie hike across the Grand Canyon, and later went on to complete a trek through the Sahara Desert. The pair have tales of the trials and tribulations that trekkers face on these charity journeys and they were integral to the success of this latest challenge.

While Gina Burke knows better than most why this adventure was so important. Gina works for Marie Curie and sees, on a daily basis, the difference fundraising makes to the charity.

Tracey, Liam, Bryan, Dave, Gina and the rest of the trekkers were joined on their journey by a film crew. Now they’re back they are reflecting on their journey of a lifetime.
